Prayer beads (tasbeeh) and prayer rug, Pakistan, 1990s

Collected in 2002

A set of 33 white and black Islamic prayer beads, with a longer bead and tassel coming off the centre

These Islamic prayer beads and prayer rug were kindly donated to our collection by a resident of Sandal, Wakefield.

Some Muslim people choose to use prayer beads whilst they are reciting prayers or verses from the Quran. They can help you to concentrate, be mindful and focused on your spirituality.

This set of 33 beads is known as tasbih (or tasbeeh). They are a smaller set and might have been used on the go. There are 99 beads in a full Islamic prayer bead set.

The prayer rug has a niche design at the top. This would be oriented towards Mecca during prayer.

The niche represents the mihrab in a mosque. The mihrab is a niche in the mosque wall that indicates the direction of Mecca. It also represents a gateway to the divine.
