Poster, Wakefield Mela, 1996
Collected in 1996
This poster shows the programme of events for the Wakefield Mela in 1996.
The word 'mela' comes from Sanskrit. It means to 'gather' or 'meet'.
The Mela is a South Asian festival. It comes from an Indian tradition and is sometimes associated with the Hindu faith.
Today melas are a celebration of multiculturalism, diversity and togetherness. They are vibrant, colourful events with food and drink, music and entertainment.
Wakefield Mela took place in several years during the 1990s. It was recently revived after a 20 year absence.
In 1996, the programme included dancing, sports and children's activities.
