This audio description guide accompanies the Plastic Fantastic? exhibition at Wakefield Museum.
Welcome and orientation
Welcome to the Plastic Fantastic? exhibition at Wakefield Museum. The exhibition is in our Special Exhibitions gallery. You enter the gallery through the double doors from the museum Welcome Space.
Before you enter the exhibition, there are some resources that may help your visit. You can pick up these resources from the left-hand side of the gallery doors in the museum Welcome Space. The resources include:
- Large print text
- Braille
You are welcome to take these resources to use in the gallery. Please return them for other visitors to use when you leave the exhibition.
When you enter the exhibition, turn left and move clockwise around the room. There is a wooden ledge that runs around the space to help guide you.
As you move round the room, you will find 5 replicas of key objects from the exhibition that you are very welcome to touch. These are mounted on small square wooden blocks attached to the wooden ledge. They are 3D printed using a bio-plastic called PLA (polylactic acid), which is made from crops like corn or sugar and is biodegradable and compostable in the right conditions. They were designed and made by local artist, Ruth Fones. Ruth worked with people living with sight loss from the Wakefield District Sight Aid Art Beyond Vision group to select the objects.
There are tactile and braille labels underneath the objects within the wooden blocks. This audio guide will also give you more information and audio description for each of these objects.
This guide also includes information about the main topics in the exhibition plus descriptions of the displays and other key objects.
