Do A World of Good

Do A World of Good is Wakefield Museums and Castles’ commitment to take action on the climate crisis.

We recognise that man-made emissions are changing the climate and harming our planet. We understand the urgent need to make changes in our work and lifestyles.

We work with the Wakefield Council Climate Change team to be more environmentally responsible. Wakefield Council declared a climate emergency in May 2019. The council has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030. The Climate Change team are working to help the whole district to be carbon neutral by 2038.

Wakefield Museums and Castles has an Environmental Action Plan. Staff members from across our team come together to form an Environmental Group. We are working to deliver our programmes more sustainably. We also share environmental messaging with our audiences and encourage our visitors to take action.

Our key inspiration is the pioneering work of Charles Waterton. Waterton was a conservationist in the 1800s. He created a nature reserve at his home at Walton Hall, near Wakefield. He campaigned to protect wildlife from hunters and pollution. Waterton was ahead of his time. He hoped his work would do "a world of good".

Today the need to follow his example and take action is more urgent than ever.
